My hubby and I have been traveling together for nearly twenty years.
Today, getting away for a big adventure doesn’t happen as often as we’d like. And now when we do hit the road we usually have two kids along for the ride.
But in a few weeks we’ll be relaxing on the beach in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. No kids. And I can’t wait!
When planning this adult only Playa del Carmen getaway, we knew we wanted warm weather, a nice beach and plenty of time to just relax. And have, you know, actual conversations. No interruptions.
And while Playa del Carmen is the perfect setting for this romantic getaway, we knew that picking the perfect hotel was equally important.
How we selected the right hotel for an adults-only Playa del Carmen vacation.
Go With Adults only.
Ok this one should be obvious, but please be sure to select a hotel that is adults only. The last thing you want on your getaway from the kids is a pool full of screaming kids.
It may be tempting to stay at a family-friendly hotel down the beach for a better price. But don’t do it! You’ll regret it.
Determine what’s most important to you? (Hint: It may not be price.)
I’m ashamed to admit it, but even as a professional traveler I’ve selected some pretty awful hotels over the years. How does this happen?
Using the wrong criteria to pick a hotel. And in most instances where I’ve selected a hotel that wasn’t a good fit for the experience, that decision was based on price and price alone.
Today, thanks to Trip Advisor, other review sites and some amazing travel blogs, it’s now easier to do your research and be confident in your hotel decision. For example, when looking for the best adults only Playa del Carmen hotel, our first criteria was a hotel with a nice beach.
We also love the vibrant city of Playa del Carmen, so searched for hotels on the beach from where we could easily walk into town. Then we narrowed down our search based on our budget and made a final decision.
Leading with budget first is a good way to end up in a bad hotel.
Think about indulging in a fun activity. Especially for couples who have been together for a long time, or perhaps have not taken a vacation sans kids in years, it’s a great idea to plan at least one fun activity you both will like. Even better, surprise your partner with a special activity once you arrive!
When selecting hotels, have a look to see if they can help plan or organize activities such as boat tours, snorkeling trips, Cenote adventures or even a romantic lunch on the beach. Perhaps a day at the spa is what you’re looking for?
It’s worth digging into a hotel’s web site and blog to see if and how they talk about on-site or offered activities and excursions.
Hotels that cater to the Honeymoon market are usually very good at this kind of thing, so if you see lots of photos and mentions of Honeymoon clients that may be a very good sign!
So where ARE we staying for our adults only Playa del Carmen vacation?? You’ll have to wait and see!
I promise to share lots of pictures and all the details in a few weeks!
