Together, the towns of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo san Lucas on the Baja peninsula of Mexico are known as Los Cabo. With a well-earned reputation as a party destination overflowing with Spring Breakers, it may be surprising to learn than San Jose del Cabo is also a fabulous family destination.
But there are some great hotels in San Jose del Cabo and here are some of the best things to do in Cabo with kids.
Participate in Important Sea Turtle Conservation Work
The warm sands of Los Cabos are home to nesting sea turtles. It is believed that each mother turtle returns to lay her eggs on the same beach where, at least a decade before, it was born. But thanks to development and increased activity on the beach, it can be difficult for the fragile, tiny turtle hatchlings to make their way to the ocean.
Baja Outback Adventures is one local company that offers a certified naturalist-led program in which participants can “adopt” a hatchling and help them make their way into the Sea of Cortez. This is a fun way for kids to learn about the importance of marine conservation.
Soak in the Sun at the Safe and Swimmable Medano Beach
While the water may look tempting, many of the beaches in Los Cabos are not swimmable due to strong and dangerous undertow currents. Of the few beaches that are considered safe for swimming, centrally located Playa El Médano (Dune Beach) is the most popular among families.
Bring a cooler and rent chairs on site, and spend the day swimming, people watching and building sand castles. If you’d prefer a bit more solitude, wander in either direction and set up in a quiet corner of the beach. In the center of the beach you’ll find ten restaurants, and a number of hotels, spas, and watercraft rentals as well.
Witness the Amazing Annual Whale Migration
Each year during the winter months, you can catch the California Gray whales make an epic migration from Alaska all the way down to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to give birth.
Organize a group tour with a knowledgeable guide for an experience kids will love. Whale mothers have been known to bring their young right up to the tour boats to get a look at the passengers! Some of the tour companies include photographers on the boat, so you can relax, enjoy the experience and pick up professional photos at the end of the tour.
Pretend You’re Jack Sparrow on the Buccaneer Queen
You may recognize The Buccaneer Queen, a magnificent tall ship, from her numerous film and TV appearances. Choose from a variety of tours including sunset sails, whale watching, and snorkeling tours.
The most popular Sunset Adventure tours feature dinner, games and the famous Pirate Show, the story of a captain who lost everything looking to regain his ship, crew, and treasure.
With warm weather, plenty to do and great places to stay, your family will have a great time in San Jose del Cabo!
